What is a PSA Test?

What is a PSA Test?

PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test is a simple blood test that measures the level of PSA in your bloodstream. Elevated PSA levels may indicate:

1. Prostate cancer
2. Benign prostatic enlargement (BPH)
3. Prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate)

It is not a definitive diagnostic test, but it is an important tool in early prostate cancer detection.

Who Should Consider PSA Testing?

50 or over

Are aged 50 or over (or 45+ with risk factors).

Family history

Have a family history of prostate cancer.

Urinary symptoms

Are experiencing urinary symptoms (difficulty starting/stopping, frequent urination, weak stream).

Baseline check

Want a baseline check for preventive health monitoring.

How to Prepare for a PSA Test?

To ensure your PSA blood test results are as accurate as possible, it’s important to follow some simple preparation guidelines:

  • Avoid ejaculation for 48 hours before the test – sexual activity can temporarily raise PSA levels.
  • Avoid vigorous exercise (especially cycling, horse riding, or heavy lifting) for 48 hours – this can also affect the results.
  • Delay the test if you have a urinary infection – wait until the infection has cleared, as it can falsely elevate PSA.
  • Wait after a rectal exam – wait for 7 days after a rectal exam, as it can falsely elevate PSA.
  • Avoid recent prostate procedures or catheterisation – if you’ve had a prostate biopsy, cystoscopy, or catheter, you should wait at least 6 weeks before a PSA test.
  • Tell your GP about medications – some medicines (such as finasteride or dutasteride, used for prostate enlargement) can lower PSA levels and need to be taken into account.
  • You do not need to fast before a PSA test – you can eat and drink normally.
