Microsuction is a popular alternative to traditional ear syringing (ear irrigation) and has several advantages:

  1. Safety: Microsuction is considered a safer method of earwax removal compared to ear syringing. We use a specialized microscope or loupe to provide a clear view of the ear canal, ensuring that we can see what we are doing and avoid causing damage to the delicate ear structures.
  2. Effective: Microsuction is highly effective at removing impacted or stubborn ear wax. We use a suction device to gently and precisely remove the wax from the ear canal without the need for water or irrigation.
  3. Less Messy: Unlike ear syringing, which involves flushing the ear with water, microsuction is a dry procedure. This means there is no mess or risk of water entering the ear, which can be uncomfortable or even lead to infection.
  4. Suitable for All Ages: Microsuction is suitable for both children and adults. It is a well-tolerated procedure and we perform on individuals of all ages from 5 years old, from children to the elderly as long as they can stay still during the procedure.
  5. Quick and Minimally Disruptive: Microsuction is typically a quick procedure, often taking only a few minutes per ear. It is usually well-tolerated and minimally disruptive, making it suitable for those with busy schedules.
  6. Using Drops before Appointment: Microsuction can be less uncomfortable and quicker if wax-softening spray/drops are used for 3 nights before, and on the morning of, the appointment. You can buy a wax-softening spray, such as Earol® olive oil spray/drops, at your local pharmacy.
  7. Free Follow up: Occasionally the wax may be hard and you may need a follow up. You will be offered a free follow up if needed.
Ear Wax Removal Via Microsuction

It’s important to note that ear wax serves a protective function in the ear, and not all of it needs to be removed. It should only be removed when causing symptoms such as hearing loss, ear pain, dizziness, or tinnitus. Attempting to remove it at home with cotton swabs or other objects is discouraged, as it can push the wax deeper into the ear canal and potentially cause injury.
